Product Description
Bolt is a funny animated film about a dog who thinks he has superpowers. It is also a movie about friendship, perseverance, and the power of believing in oneself. Everyone knows that superheroes on television are not real, but super-dog Bolt (John Travolta) is a canine star who has been carefully raised to believe that he really possesses superpowers. Bolt is completely devoted to his human co-star Penny (Miley Cyrus), so when Penny is captured by the evil Dr. Calico (Malcolm McDowell) in their latest television episode and then Bolt accidentally gets loose in the real world, Bolt sets off on a journey to save her. Bolt is confounded when his super powers are suddenly ineffective, but inspiration strikes and Bolt quickly discovers the mysterious, power-stealing effects of Styrofoam packing peanuts. An encounter with alley cat Mittens (Susie Essman) gives Bolt some eye-opening lessons about being a real dog in the real world, while star-struck, ball-enclosed hamster Rhino (Mark Walton) revels in the opportunity to serve as Bolt's sidekick in the quest to rescue Penny. The trio traverses the United States from waffle house to waffle house on a hysterical quest to find Penny and prove that the relationship between Penny and Bolt is real. In the end, Bolt, Mittens, and Rhino learn that everyone is special in their own way and they discover the true power of believing in oneself and one's friends. Select theaters showed Bolt in Real-D 3-D which features some nice effects, but the film is probably equally enjoyable in the traditional format. on 2010-02-15"Bolt," brilliantly animated and spectacular in Blu-Ray, has an intriguing premise. Bolt is the wonder TV dog that performs outstanding physical and mental feats in order to protect his "person," his owner, young Penny. The hook for the film is a long section of action footage in which Bolt and Penny are doing super-hero work against the evil Dr. Calico. Bolt is isolated from the real world, locked in his studio trailer, and doesn't realize he's acting, the stunts are faked, and he's just an ordinary dog who deeply loves his mistress and will do anything for her.
Bolt gets inadvertently shipped to New York from Hollywood. In New York Bolt encounters an extortionist cat named Mittens whom he ties up and takes with him on his cross-country trip. He befriends a hamster named Rhino, but what is the rodent doing in a plastic sphere?
The movie has its slow parts particularly Bolt's gradual realization of his ordinariness. It's a journey to self-awareness. A thunderbolt had been painted on his flank, and he discovers that it's just paint.
Most animated films seem to have a didactic quality, preaching lessons of inspiration to children, building up their egos, making them more open to loving others and themselves. On his way back across country, what Bolt learns from his friend Mittens: love conquers all, and despite his lack of super powers, he still has to fight to get back to his Penny and never give up his sense of self-worth just because he isn't a super dog. Better to be a real dog than a fake TV dog.
John Travolta's voice is perfect for the part of Bolt--very believable, sincere, and earnest. Penny's chunky mother and the greedy agent add to the story line. A lot of background stuff about moviemaking is well-done.
It's a great movie for kids. There's no inappropriate adult humor, and dogs nosing around each other shouldn't be offensive.

on 2010-02-06Item description stated this item was new, when I recieved the DVD, the case was cracked, it had been poorly rewrapped and there were pen scribblings on the wrapping. When I sent the DVD back, I was promised a full refund, but never recieved it.

on 2010-02-05This is a really funny family film. The humor is clean and child-friendly (how many movies can say that?) There is a scary bit with some fierce dogs, but the good guys pull through for each other. Other reviews tell the story, so I'll skip that part. If your child(ren) like pets, they'll like this movie. It's very well done: excellent casting, animation is superb, script is good. Young children will enjoy it, though they may not get the whole story. Older children (preteens and young teens) enjoy it as well, because it's so funny. The target group (grade-school age kids) love it. Nothing scary (except the one dog scene), nothing dirty, lots of fun. Adults enjoy watching it with their kids. I recommend it.
